One of the highlights of today is visiting the historic Leh palace as you get fascinating panoramic views of the Magnificent leh and its surrounding areas.
Lamayuru is famously known as ‘Moonland’ due its Moon-like craters and Lunar landscape. Lamayuru monastery is the main attraction here, it is one of the most intriguing places to visit here for sure; being one of the oldest and largest monasteries in ladakh ,it definitely has a lot of stories and legend associated to it. On our way back we visit Fotu la pass one of the two high mountain passes between Leh and Kargil. It is also the highest point on the Srinagar-Leh highway in the Zanskar range, this picturesque mountain pass standing at 4108 metres in Ladakh is a true marvel.
On our way to Nubra valley also known as the ‘Orchard of Ladakh’ we cross the mighty Khardung la pass, one of the highest motorable roads in the world. Click as many pictures as you want at the mighty khardung la as long as you can bare the cold. Nubra valley is famous for its orchards, scenic vistas, bactrain camels and monastery. Bactrain camel ride is an experience one should indulge in. Diskit monastery has an impressive 108 foot long Buddha statue facing down the Shyok river. Night time in Nubra valley is even more magical as the starry sky urges you to gaze at it for long durations.
Turtuk is a village on the India-Pakistan border , it is the last outpost of Indian controlled Ladakh and also one of the gateways to Siachen glacier. The route from Nubra to Turtuk gives you a feel of an Alien landscape as it is simply out of this world. Turuk is known for its variety of fruits especially apricots which you can gorge on.The habitat of Turtuk are the balti people who are more than willing to let you know about their culture and history.
The route from Turtuk to Pangong Tso is through barren desert land with distant snow capped peaks and river Shyok flowing parallel all the way. Pangong lake is the most sought after destination in ladakh mainly because of its scenic vistas, geographical significance and “3 Idiots”. The serene lake also offers a good sighting of migratory birds. You will be mesmerized with this majestic lake as it is a natural wonder like no other.
Pangong Lake is popular for its changing colour ability. Its colour changes from shades of blue to green. It is one of the highest altitude lakes in the world that is filled with saline water. The morning spent in Pangong is worth every minute as the mystical lake enchants you with its sheer beauty. The journey towards leh gives a thrill of an overland expedition journey.
Tso moriri lake is the highest altitude lake in the Indian territory making it equally pristine, scenic and calm. This lake is undoubdtedly less visited than Pangong but those who visit are in such awe that they believe it to be more tantalizing than Pangong lake. It is so captivating that it makes you want to extend your stay here just due to its sheer beauty.
On our way back to Leh we visit the fluctuating Tso kar lake which is nestled amidst the mountains and has a rich flora and fauna. Tanglang la pass at an elevation of 5328 metres will be crossed by us as we reach hustling bustling Leh. The town of Leh will great us with honking of cars and populated streets something which we did not witness in the past few days.
Today we see the best of Leh as we visit Thiksey, Hemis and shey monastery. Thiksey monastery is an architectural wonder as it is 12 story complex on a mountain top. The monastery houses plenty of Buddhist literature, artifacts and statues. We also visit the iconic 3 idiots school which was notably featured in the movie 3 idiots. Visiting these historic monasteries is of utmost significance as these are some of the oldest and prestigious structures in Leh.
